My personal journey—a voyage marked by resilience, transformation, and hope was not an easy one, but throughout this difficult journey, I found peace, love and strength. I am a part of three transformative programs—Al-Anon, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and Overeaters Anonymous (OA). As I pen down my thoughts, I hope my story serves as a guiding light for those seeking their own paths of healing.

Recovery, for me, is more than an ending a destructive habit; it's a process of getting out of the dark and into the light and a reawakening into life’s beautiful possibilities. My initial footsteps into this journey was not a chosen path but a response to a circumstance. Wrestling with alcohol, I faced the heart-wrenching separation from my children. I was forced to complete the program to be reunited with them, and I am glad I had the opportunity to go through the program.

I am now a support person after completion my 12 steps and I get to help others just like I got the help I needed. For those embarking on their journeys of recovery, I advocate seeking online resources— finding a community of understanding hearts can make all the difference.

There are many different types of individuals who come to these groups. I’ve supported people who have opposite backgrounds like the sun and moon – I helped homeless people, wealthy people, young, old, everything under the sun. What unites us is the acknowledgment of our shared struggle and the realization that recovery is a journey best undertaken with the support of a higher power. This higher power can be anything, God, the universe, nature, etc.

There are zoom and in person meetings, so people can attend which ever meeting they’re comfortable with. The meetings are also anonymous so if anyone is hesitant because of their identity, no one has to share who they are. For anyone who is seeking help, simply google what type of help you need and there will be many options that will come up for you. Help is out there, you just gotta find it.

I have been supporting people for about 22 years now and the best part is to see the change in their eyes. It’s almost like they have their life back. Their personality changes, attitude, glimmer of hope when they speak, etc. It’s absolutely beautiful and heart-warming. This why I do what I do. When we connect heart to heart, we bring love and hope back into the world.

As I reflect on my story, I hope it resonates with those who, like me, have sought comfort in the journey of recovery. May it serve as evidence to the transformative power of resilience, community, and the unwavering belief that, even in the darkest moments, there is always a sunrise on the horizon.

With warmth,

Dorothy
